For centuries, tea has been the preferred drink in the Far East. Today, most of the world has discovered the flavor as well as the benefits of drinking tea. Regardless of the type, tea has been touted with many health benefits ranging from cancer prevention to weight loss. Have you ever wondered whether tea is more than a flavorful drink?
Oolong, also known as Wu-Long, is a black Chinese tea. There are several stories about how it came about but they all go back about 400-500 years. Nevertheless, this incredible tea originally grown in the vicinity of Mount Wu Yi from the Fujian Province, a place still known as the cleanest place on earth; it is grown in Taiwan today. Oolong tea is one that is oxidized and fired creating a taste and color like no other.
Truth # 1 Oolong tea burns fat
Research by Han et al published in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders in 1999 showed that Oolong tea burns fat and reduces the absorption of fat in the diet. If the intestines do not absorb fat consumed, weight loss occurs and if the body is burning fat, weight loss also occurs. What an easy way to lose weight! Truth #2 Oolong tea protects the heart and vascular system
The bulk of the tea research out there has found that regular tea drinkers, those who drink two or more cups a day, have lower cholesterol levels and reduced incidence of heart disease and stroke. If regular tea drinkers do have a heart attack, research has shown they recover quicker.
Truth # 3 Oolong tea improves glucose levels in Diabetics
Research reported in the 2007 Journal of Exercise Physiology showed that consuming 75ml of Oolong tea reduced blood glucose levels by an average of 11 mcg. The pre-test glucose levels were 108.5+15.1 and after the cup of Oolong, the levels were 97.8+12.7. There were no noted episodes of hypoglycemia with the reductions in glucose. These reductions were noted with just one cup of tea; imagine the glucose control with drinking tea several times a day!
Truth #4 Oolong tea has antioxidant properties, which prevent cancer
Tea research over the past ten years has repeatedly reported all types of tea, especially Oolong have antioxidants. These studies have even reported that smokers who drink four cups of tea daily have a lower level of DNA cell damage, ie. genetic alterations that have been linked to cancer. In rodent studies lung tumors were fewer in those drinking tea. The fantastic effects of antioxidants!
