CONCORD, N.C. — In a shocking move, Hendrick Motorsports has shuffled crew chiefs on three of its four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams for the 2011 season.

Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will all have new crew chiefs next season. Martin will now work with Lance McGrew, previously Earnhardt’s crew chief. Earnhardt will now be paired with Gordon’s former crew chief Steve Letarte while Gordon will be teamed with Martin’s former crew chief Alan Gustafson.

The team also announced that the cars of Martin and Gordon will now be fielded out of the same facility while the cars of Earnhardt and Johnson will be fielded out of the second Hendrick Motorsports shop.

“This will improve us as an organization, across the board,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, in a statement. “We had a championship season (in 2010), but we weren’t where we wanted and needed to be with all four teams. We’ve made the right adjustments, and I’m excited to go racing with this lineup.”

Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson won his fifth-straight NASCAR Sprint Cup championship Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway and won six races this season.

In comparison, the rest of the Hendrick Motorsports teams failed to visit victory lane. Gordon was ninth in the point standings, followed by Martin in 13th and Earnhardt in 21st.
