Lipodissolve, lipozap, lipotherapy or injection lipolysis could be a good option for people who want to get rid of cellulite without having the invasive effect of liposuction or the high cost associated with lipo surgery. Although this medical treatment to remove fat from small unwanted areas has been available to help people with weight problems for more than ten years, many of us don’t know what it is exactly.

Lipodissolve, what is it?

The lipodissolve treatment consists of multiple subcutaneous injections of lipostabil, a substance composed of phosphatidylcholine as its main ingredient, in affected fatty areas such as the tights, the buttock, the stomach or the face. Phosphatidylcholine or PC is a biological compound composed of phosphoric acid, choline, fatty acids and glycerol.

Phosphatidylcholine, what is it?

Phosphatidylcholine is found in egg yolk and soy beans and is the main component of all human cell membranes at birth (up to 90% of the cell membrane of a new born child and an infant is composed of PC). Due to its ability to be fully metabolized by the human body and break down fat, phosphatidylcholine was originally used in the treatment of heart disease to prevent fat accumulation in arteries by lowering cholesterol levels.

When and where was Lipodissolve used first?

Lipodissolve as a way to remove fat was first used with success in 1995, in Sao Paulo Brazil, by dermatologist Dr. Patricia Rittes in a self- experiment. She injected Phosphatidylcholine into the fat pockets found in her lower eyelids with convincing results. In Europe, following the positive results of further studies of the drug lipostabil in 2002, in 2002, Doctor Franz Hasengschwandtner started the first treatment of patients with similar success.

Lipodissolve not FDA approved in the USA.

Lipodissolve has yet to be FDA approved in the USA.

The director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research,Janet Woodcock, M.D., says:

“We are concerned that these companies are misleading consumers. It is important for anyone who is considering this voluntary procedure to understand that the products used to perform lipodissolve procedures are not approved by FDA for fat removal.”

The FDA warns that in some cases the improper use of lipodissolve has lead to:

  • permanent scarring
  • skin deformation
  • deep, painful knots under the skin in areas where the lipodissolve treatments were injected

Lipodissolve in Europe and the rest of the world.

This procedure - which does not involve any general anesthesia - has been practiced successfully in Europe and worldwide in well over 18,000 interventions with few side effects such as:itching, redness, bruising, tingling and numbness.

Lipodissolve as any medical procedure should be well researched and discussed thoroughly with a qualified Medical Doctor before you make any decision.
