Williamson, who also gets ￡100,000, full membership of the BRDC, a TW Steel watch, Puma racewear for a year, and the offer of media training with Lee McKenzie, was revealed as the winner at the AUTOSPORT Awards in London on Sunday night.
The 21-year-old was presented with the Award by former winners David Coulthard and Paul di Resta.
“What do you say? I’m just in shock,” said Williamson. “I went up there [to the driver evaluation] and just did what I’ve done all year; give it 100 per cent. That’s all you can do.
“When I was told I was in the final six, I was at work and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was in shock then and I broke down in tears, so to win…”
Williamson beat Formula Renault Eurocup runner-up Luciano Bacheta, Formula Renault UK champion Tom Blomqvist, Formula BMW Europe runner-up Jack Harvey, British Formula Ford runner-up Scott Malvern, and Formula Palmer Audi champion Nigel Moore to the prize after a number of tests, including driving a Formula 2 machine and an HWA DTM Mercedes at Silverstone last month.
Former recipients of the award include 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button, former grand prix winner David Coulthard and IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti.
This year’s judging panel included 1992 World Sports Car champion Derek Warwick, double British Touring Car champion Jason Plato, and former McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award winner Jamie Green.
