The Racing Steps Foundation driver lost control of his Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen and hit the barrier on the exit of the Mandarin kink on the first lap.
His car speared across the circuit and into Alexander Sims before hitting the wall on the inside of the track.
The accident inflicted extensive damage on Sims’ car and both drivers will now start tomorrow’s main race from the back of the grid.
“I came through the fast right kink before Lisboa, which is usually easy flat - like Woodcote at Silverstone - and just lost the rear at 160mph,” Calado said.
“I went into the barrier and don’t know what happened. There was a big impact, which launched me 200m further down the road, and left me and Sims with half a car each.
“It caught me by surprise. I shunted into the barrier at one of the easiest corners on the track!
“It’s annoying. Maybe I lost it because I was on the dirty side [of the track]. I’ve just got a stiff neck - I think the HANS did a good job.”
Calado is hoping to finish his first visit to Macau on a high by salvaging a decent result from tomorrow’s finale.
“My strategy for tomorrow is not to go full throttle through the first right-hander, just hang on and hope for the best,” he said.
