Christmas has long since been a time where alcohol flows more freely, especially at the office party or the Christmas Eve pub crawl. However, there is a big price to pay for binge drinking, not just financially but also emotionally and physically.

Top Reasons to Quit Drinking Alcohol - Ditch the Booze this Christmas

One of the best reasons why it is well worth ditching the booze this Christmas, involves saving money that could otherwise be spent on memorable holidays with hangovers not included. Further reasons to consider quitting alcohol, include the following:

  • personal safety - risk of rape or assault is far less without alcohol impairing decisions
  • physical health - love your liver, rather than poison it
  • emotional health - how many times have you felt depressed the day after a night on the town?
  • sleep better - alcohol impairs sleep and good sleep is essential for physical and mental health

How to Lose Weight by Avoiding Alcohol

A really strong motivator for anyone overweight and struggling to shift those extra pounds to avoid alcohol is the link between drinking and weight gain. Would anyone head to the nearest kebab shop or burger van and binge eat at 3 am if they were sober? Alcohol itself is absolutely loaded with calories and when you consume several glasses of wine and a couple of shots or pints on a night out, you will likely end up way past the healthy recommended daily calorie intake.

If you really can't bear the thought of a dry Christmas, then make wiser drinking choices. Drink something alcohol-free (water is best) every other round and this will help your wallet and waist-line. Switch from drinking pints to a white wine spritzer and drink more slowly, avoiding the bar shots.

Drinking Alcohol Worsens Depression - Boost Mood by Ditching Booze

Another good reason to ditch the booze is if you are suffering from depression or have suffered from mental health problems in the past. Alcohol is never a good mix with depression, especially when on antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics. A great night out is never worth ending up with a worsening of depression, as the condition can result in devastating consequences.

If your partner or friend is depressed or suffering from mental health conditions, such as generalized anxiety disorder or bipolar disorder, then why not help them and plan a night out where alcohol is uninvited. Sure, friends may not thank you for questioning drinking whilst medicated, but being a true friend means more and they will likely appreciate it when they wake up the next day minus a stinking hangover.

As highlighted above, key reasons to consider going teetotal relate to physical, mental and emotional health, not to mention your bank balance. If you suffer from depression or are overweight, then this lifestyle change will help with both issues.
