One of the most awful parts of the holidays is trying to maintain or lose weight. With so much emphasis placed on eating cookies, candies, cakes and other baked goods, it is practically impossible not to put on a few pounds this time of year. If this is the year that you don’t want to make losing weight one of your New Year’s resolutions, try out some of these great suggestions on maintaining or losing weight around the holidays.

Know Your Health Numbers

One of the best ways to motivate a dieter is to use visual cues. This can be done a couple of different ways. First, know your numbers and look at them often. Calculate your body mass index and mark it down alongside your weight. Post these two numbers in places where you will be the most tempted to overindulge. Are you going away for the holidays? Write the numbers on your hand. Every time to reach for another cookie or piece of cake, there those numbers will be staring right at you. These numbers will be a reminder that you don’t really want any more sugary foods to eat. Staying in for the holidays? Put the numbers on the refrigerator and the cookie drawer. No one wants to see their numbers go up.

Weight Loss Programs

Second, consider a diet plan to help you through the season of temptation. Programs such as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers can provide you with counseling that can aim you in the right direction. These programs can be costly, but most times will offer discounts around the holidays. Losing weight around the holidays doesn’t have to be a process that you go through alone. When you join a program such as these, you will soon be surrounded by people in your same situation who can work with you to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Take it Easy on Yourself

Lastly, do not beat yourself up if you slip here and there. Anyone who denies herself sweet treats all of the time is more likely headed for a real fall off of the wagon. Everything in moderation is the key, even with dieting. If you do take in a few extra snacks at a holiday gathering, make up for it the next day by eating only healthy, low calorie foods. Eventually your diet will balance out and you will be on the right track to healthful holiday eating.
