Dr. Mike Moreno developed the 17 Day Diet plan for execution in four cycles cleverly all beginning with the letter 'A'. Each of the four cycles require 17 days to complete although the last step may be considered a lifestyle eating plan rather than a cycle. The 17 Day Diet comes with an exercise plan -- a 17-minute workout video.

The 17 day cycle concept is based on the idea of calorie shifting. Adjusting your habits at regular intervals causes metabolic confusion, a strategy that allows your body to burn more fat by varying the nature of calories consumed. This diet targets fat in the abdomen (visceral fat) otherwise known as "belly fat".

The 17 Day Diet Cycles | Four A's

1. Accelerate: The first cycle focuses on limiting carbohydrate intake and cleansing your body.

2. Activate: Metabolism boosting cycle

3. Achieve: Good carbohydrates are re-introduced to the diet

4. Arrive: Lifestyle eating plan which combines the first 3 cycles.

About Dr. Mike Moreno

Dr. Moreno is San Diego, California-based family physician recognized for his appearances on the daytime show, 'The Doctors', produced by Dr. Phil McGraw and son, Jay McGraw. Moreno, according to his website, sits on the board of the San Diego Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Mike launched a program called, "Walk With Your Doc", in 2008 to encourage his patients to be active to improve their health. He walks early every Tuesday and Thursday with a group before his workday begins.

17 Day Diet in a Nutshell

The program teaches dieters how to eat "clean" or avoid processed foods and bad carbs to get back on track with weight loss. On the diet, you are free to eat the foods that you normally enjoy on the weekends. Essentially, you eat healthy foods all week and enjoy junk food in moderation on Saturday and Sunday while maintaining a moderately active lifestyle.

The 17 Day Diet book includes recipes offering ideas of what kinds of foods you should and should not be consuming. Recipes include oven barbecued chicken, Dr. Mike's power cookie, probiotic shakes, eggplant parmesean, lettuce wraps, and turkey black bean chili to name a few. A major requirement for a successful diet is working out with the 17 minute video to create a calorie deficit and speed weight loss. It should be mentioned that if you choose to indulge on the weekends, although it is allowed in the plan, your weight loss progress will be slowed.

The Bottom Line

If you aren't prepared to exercise on a regular basis, make the switch from beef and pork to turkey or fish, exchange buffalo wings and blue cheese dressing for vegetables and spicy yogurt dip, then this diet probably isn't right for you.

There is no super secret special diet food or magic tea that makes the pounds effortlessly melt away. After starting the 17 Day Diet, there is no going off of it at the end of the last cycle. Your eating habits on the diet have to be maintained for life. The key to lasting weight loss always eating a balanced diet and getting adequate exercise.
