There is a great debate about the best dietary foods to eat if you are trying to lose weight. Should you eat less fat? Eat fewer calories? Or simply eat less food? Any of these approaches would work but after years of clinical experience and research it has been found that reducing carbohydrates gets closer to the underlying metabolic problems that prevent weight loss So what should you do? That’s simple, change to a low-carbohydrate diet approach to weight loss.
Following a low-carb way of eating not only helps you lose the pounds but also helps to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, whilst boosting your energy levels.
The low-carb way to weight loss is a fairly new area of weight-loss research. It shows that if planned wisely it could be the most effective and satisfying ways to lose weight and keep it off.
The Smart Low-Carb Way
The idea of smart low-carb eating is simple and quite different to the variety of low-carb diets on the market. The smart low-carb way is not saying that the only starch you can eat is oatmeal, or that all you can eat is bacon and cream, or that the main proportion of your daily diet should come from lean proteins. No, instead the idea of smart low-carb eating stresses minimising refined-grain foods and sweets and replacing them with protein-rich, high-fibre meals that helps to normalise blood sugar levels and curb the impulse to binge eat.
Why The Smart Low-Carb Way Works
It has been agreed amongst most health professionals that the low-carb way of losing weight is the eating strategy which results in the most sustainable weight loss.
Proponents of the low-carb approach base their reasoning upon a comparison between how the body metabolises carbohydrates and how it breaks down protein and fats. In other words, eating too many carbohydrate grams may increase insulin (also known as the fat hormone) to such a high level that more glucose becomes available to the cells than the body needs for energy. And you’re probably asking what happens to that excess glucose? Guess what? It turns into fat. But what’s even worse is that your blood sugar goes down because the glucose is going into the body’s cell as fat, and when your blood sugar begins to drop, you then begin to feel hungry and need to eat.
The best way to eat to lose weight is with a fibre-rich diet which will give you a sense of fullness as opposed to a low-fibre simple carbohydrate food which leaves you feeling constantly hungry. This cycle may help to explain why sugar seems to have an addictive quality and why carbohydrate rich meals lead to excess weight.
What to Eat The Smart Low-Carb Way
To lose weight the smart low-carb way you should eat more wholegrain foods. They have a more complex taste and texture than refined foods and those with a low glycemic index (GI) can help you lose weight and keep you satisfied for longer.
Eat more fruit and vegetables. Choose green vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, asparagus and leafy greens. These vegetables are low in carbs and have a low glycemic index, and won’t send your blood sugar levels soaring.
Include leans proteins and healthy fats. Go for lean cuts of meat and remove any visible fat before eating. The same applies to poultry remove skin before eating. Fish is a terrific source of healthy fats and is low in calories.
