PERRIS, Calif. — Levi Jones has become the man to beat in USAC open-wheel competition.

Driving the Tony Stewart Racing Maxim-Kistler No. 20, Jones opened the three-night Budweiser Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway with a victory in the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series event and in the process sliced Bryan Clauson’s lead in the USAC National Drivers Championship to just nine points.

Jones, who entered the 25-lap feature at the half-mile dirt track, trailing Clauson by 22 markers, grabbed the lead from Bud Kaeding on lap 23 and paced the final three laps for his eighth USAC sprint-car triumph of the season, extending his point lead in that series to 144 points over Clauson.

Danny Sheridan led the first three laps before giving way to Kaeding, who set the pace until Jones took control.

Kaeding finished second ahead of fast-qualifier Matt Mitchell, USAC-CRA Sprint Car Series point-leader Mike Spencer and Blake Fitzpatrick.

Fifty-one cars were on hand for the event, which was co-sanctioned by the USAC-CRA Sprint Car Series.
