According to Obesity Statistics, 8 out of 10 Americans over the age of 25 are considered overweight. That is only one of a few shocking statistics on the website. With obesity levels rising in America, it is imperative to stay in shape and maintain a healthy living style. Here are five specific helpful tips to maintain a healthy body weight and lose a few pounds slowly over the long term.

Take a Brisk Walk or a Quick Run

Some people aren't cut out for running. Its not always the right exercise plan for asthmatics and arthritis sufferers, or for many people with a low tolerance for pain. I can't stand running but I love to walk. A quick run will burn off 50-150 calories. A fifteen minute walk, every day, will burn off a few calories in the process, not enough to really make a difference though. Although these brief exercise stints won't make you thin overnight, they will keep your metabolism up during the day and your body will be using that converted energy instead of storing it as fat.

Eat Slower

It takes about fifteen to twenty minutes for our brain to let our stomach know that we are full. I'm a terribly fast eater and always wolf down my food. It is an awful habit since there is a tendency to overeat. If you take more time to chew, and give yourself thirty seconds between bites, you may find that you're eating less.

Instead of Three Meals a Day, Eat Five Smaller Meals

Weight Watchers and Smart Choice Meals taste pretty good and they range from 250--350 calories. Eating smaller portions every few hours in the day will keep your metabolism running high. The size of the portions in American restaurants is getting out of control. In addition to your entree, with two sides, there are tempting, high calorie appetizers (with lots of cheese!). There is no need to eat this much food in one sitting. Eating more time times throughout the day but small portions can help you maintain your body weight, and you won't get craving hunger pains.

Avoid Soda and High Sugar Drinks

People think that drinks don't count. Soda has alot of empty calories. High sugar caffeinated drinks may help you stay awake if you are sleepy, but the sugar content can make you crash a few hours later. If you like the taste of soda, stick to diet soda, but in moderation. Diet soda can be more addictive. Water is still the healthiest option. Another healthy option is drinking V-8. You get a serving of vegetables.

These five helpful tips may not help you lose weight fast, which isn't the most effective way to maintain a long term healthy body weight anyway. There's a tendency to go to extremes with our weight--You may want to lose weight fast for a wedding, but remember, you'll probably overcompensate with large meals at the event and later on. These are good habits to adopt over the long term in order to maintain a healthy body weight.
